Glossary
The glossary shows all the important terms about the world of sport.
- Amino acids
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Chains of amino acids form peptides and proteins.
- Anabol
building
- BCAA
Branched-chain amino acids. Includes the three amino acids leucine, valine and isoleucine.
- Carnitine
L-carnitine is a substance like amino acids and has the function to transport fatty acids to the muscles to burn.
- Catabolic
degrading
- Creatine
Creatine is a substance like amino acids and only occurs in the muscles, there are no vegetarian sources. Commercially manufactured and used in supplements is only the synthetically produced creatine. Creatine increases the physical performance in short-term, intensive physical exercises.
- HIIT
High intensity interval training is a particular training method. It enables training sessions with high efficiency despite its quick, high intense interval bursts in a relatively short period of time.
- Leucine
L-leucine is the most important anabolic amino acid. It plays a crucial role in the initiation of the muscle protein synthesis.
- Metabolism
Metabolism
- Peptides
Chains of up to approx. 100 amino acids. E.g. di- and tripeptides are chains of two or three amino acids.
- Thermogenesis
Heat generation; production of heat by metabolic activity of living organisms. Heat is generated as a by-product of metabolic processes like energy metabolism, digestion and muscle activity.
